Ford is making an interesting habit of giving low-ball estimates regarding the mileage of their new vehicles, only to later announce final EPA numbers that are higher by several miles per gallon. This happened with the Fusion Hybrid which was estimated at 39 miles-per-gallon city and then ended up at 41 mpg city. The latest example is the new Transit Connect compact van. When Ford announced the US bound production version just before the Chicago Auto Show, product development boss Derrick Kuzak estimated it would get 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. The EPA has now finished its data analysis and come up with even better numbers: 22 mpg around town and 25 mpg on the motorways. Not too shabby for a vehicle with this much room inside and only a four speed automatic transmission.

Ford is soliciting applications for brand ambassadors who think they’re cool enough to be seen in the 2010 Ford Fiesta. That’s right, hombre. This Fiesta is invitation only.
Of course, the most recent incarnation of the subcompact isn’t your weird cousin Lester’s Ford Fiesta. The 2010 model (which Europeans have been able to buy since late 2008) won more international acclaim than Slumdog Millionaire and just may be the Little Car that Could for Ford. The Fiesta already has some significant buzz in the automotive press, but Ford thinks regular folks should hear about it too. That’s why they’ve started the Fiesta Movement – a group of 100 drivers who get the chance to drive and promote a German-built Fiesta before it’s official US debut. Applicants must have “a strong presence on the web, an ability to craft a compelling story through video, and a hunger for adventure.”
On a side note, we bet poor Lester didn’t even drive a Fiesta. Close your eyes and picture it: toothpaste green and looks like a Subaru Justy, right? Wrong-o, muchacho. That deathtrap was the Festiva, and it really was a piece of crap. Get your Spanglish right before you start hating on a hatchback.
Brand agents will be responsible for following missions that, according to Ford, will “take them to new places, to meet new people and to experience new things in their Fiesta,” all of which will be broadcast on the internet. (It’s a subcompact, so get your mind out of the gutter). In addition to the social marketing experiment, Ford will provide over 100,000 pre-launch test drives to interested consumers. “It’s one thing to talk about the vehicle, but it’s another to put people into it and let them experience it,” Ford’s brand content manager Connie Fontaine said in a statement.
Along with the added publicity, the Fiesta Movement is also a soft launch for a car whose arrival on US soil has been eagerly anticipated. “This is a way to give people an early hands-on opportunity to get excited about the Fiesta while providing valuable feedback to our engineering team,” Fontaine said.
The first hundred cars will be built at Ford’s plant in Cologne, Germany, which has been churning out European Fiestas since last August. Future US models will be built in Cuautitlán, Mexico. The testers will all feature the 1.6-liter Ti-VCT (Twin Intake Variable Cam Timing) gas engine, about which What Car? magazine says is “decently torquey when accelerating gently and cruising, but [it] loves to be revved.” Sadly, the ECOnetic isn’t making it stateside.

When Ford debuted its 6F transmission back in late 2005, we were told it could handle up to 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. That transmission debuted with the automaker’s 3.5L V6 and both are now widely used together in a number of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products. Times have changed, however, and Ford has introduced a new version of its 3.5L V6 with twin turbochargers and direct injection. Called the 3.5L EcoBoost, this engine makes more power than the original 6F transmission, now called the 6F-50, can handle. Enter the 6F-55, a new version of the 6F-50 with beefed up internals to handle the 3.5L EcoBoost’s 355-365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. One example is the new ring gear on the 6F-55 (shown at right), which is 41.5mm thick compared to 31.5 mm on the 6F-50.

- Editors of Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com today named the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid one of its “2009 Best New Family Vehicles.”
- Kbb.com editors praised the 2009 Escape Hybrid’s improved – more powerful and more efficient – gas-electric powertrain and its fuel economy rating of 34 mpg in the city.
- In addition to five-passenger seating and plenty of cargo storage, the 2009 Escape Hybrid offers families a host of safe, smart and green technologies.

Dearborn, Mich., Feb. 17, 2009 – Editors of Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com today named the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid one of its “2009 Best New Family Vehicles.”
“After undergoing a major overhaul for the 2008 model year, the Ford Escape Hybrid is improved again for 2009 with a more powerful and more efficient gas-electric powertrain,” said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. “Its fuel economy rating of 34 miles per gallon in the city is even better than that of the Toyota Camry Hybrid.”
According to Nerad, the kbb.com editors considered factors such as resale value, capability and kid-friendliness when choosing this year’s list of the top 10 best cars for families, but extra emphasis was placed on fuel economy.
“Gas prices have dropped sharply from their record highs, but the sluggish economy is now dictating smart spending with a focus on overall value,” he said. “Given the current state of the economy, parents want to get even greater value for their money while buying a new vehicle that also will accommodate their family’s lifestyle and needs.”
Not only is the Ford Escape Hybrid the most fuel-efficient SUV on the planet, it also offers families the perfect combination of value and versatility, says Ford Hybrid Marketing Manager David Finnegan.
“The Escape Hybrid offers the convenience and flexibility that many families need in an ultra fuel-efficient vehicle,” he said. “You can fit five passengers plus a lot of cargo, such as sporting and camping equipment. It’s a fully functional SUV that happens to be a hybrid as well.”
Safety – an important consideration for families – comes standard on the Escape Hybrid.
All vehicles are equipped with AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control®; Safety Canopy™ side air curtain technology which offers protection for the first and second seating rows; Personal Safety System®, which includes new dual-stage front air bags for the driver and front-seat passenger, side air bags and a front passenger sensor system; tire pressure monitoring system; and the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system for rear seating positions.
“Entertainment and connectivity also are important factors for families to consider,” said Finnegan.
Along with SYNC, the Escape Hybrid offers features such as SIRIUS® Satellite Radio and Voice-Activated Navigation with SIRIUS® Travel Link™.
In addition to being kid-friendly, the Escape Hybrid is environmentally friendly, meeting strict Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV II) and Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) standards.
The 2009 model features new comfort-designed seats with soy-based foam that substitutes for petroleum-based products to conserve limited resources and reduce CO2 emissions.
Eco-friendly seat fabrics made from post-industrial 100 percent recycled materials also are offered on the Escape.
“Customers can be environmentally responsible and still have a vehicle that provides the utility of an SUV and is fun to drive,” said Finnegan.
Earning a spot on kbb.com’s exclusive list of “2009 Best New Family Vehicles” is not the only accolade the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid has received. Ward’s Automotive Group named Ford’s redesigned Escape Hybrid engine to its “2009 10 Best Engines” list. The vehicle also was recognized as “Best Crossover/SUV Value Under $28,000” by Intellichoice.com, a leading source for automotive ownership cost and value analysis.

2009 brought us a new Ford F-150, and every time there is a new F-150, we get a new Harley Davidson edition one year later. True to form, Ford has released images and details of the next Hog-lover’s truck, due in the 2010 model year.
Edmunds Inside Line reports, “Some of the more intriguing elements can be found in the cabin, where Ford said it took pains to pattern the seats after a Harley biker jacket.” Deep red and black seats are wrapped in the same leather used for the jackets, “with engraved Harley-Davidson button snaps and zippered map pockets,” using the same zippers as the official apparel. Seat bolsters are even built of the same ribbed leather used on the shoulders and elbows of Harley jackets. The center console bin is capped off with a huge Harley logo carrying the truck’s serial number and VIN.
Mechanically, Jalopnik reports, ” It gets the same 320 HP 5.4-liter you’ll find in the engine bay of the regular 2009 Ford F-150 mated to a six speed automatic powering the rear wheels or an optional Harley-unique driveline, which can be operated in 4×2 mode, AWD or 4×4 high. The suspension, on the other hand, is completely retuned for a sportier ride with more aggressive springs and shocks as well as a thicker anti-roll bar. The truck takes advantage of the sportier tune with some custom 22 inch wheels shod in 275 series, low profile, high performance Pirelli Scorpion Zeros.”
It’s a sharp-looking truck. Autoblog reports, “The body work can be ordered in either a deep maroon called Lava or the same Tuxedo Black available on the Lincoln MKS.” The Lava color is so dark it looks black in many conditions, while the actual black “color features tiny glass balls in the paint that give it even more luster in the sunshine than a conventional metallic paint. Along the flanks, a red sweep adorns the rocker panels and chrome Harley badging stretches just below the top edge of the bed.” The Harley Davidson edition’s grille differs from the one seen on other F-150s, with “a six-bar billet-style setup” heavy on the chrome.
