Ford Executive Finds EcoBoost Difficult to Market

While Ford prepares to make its EcoBoost technology available on most of its cars and trucks, the automaker’s marketing department may find it difficult to convince V-8 aficionados that its V-6 EcoBoost engines are comparable.

Ford marketing manager Mike Crowley says he’s less worried about marketing EcoBoost now than he was in 2006, but he still has his reservations about converting customers who want V-8s.

Ford Executive Finds EcoBoost Difficult to Market“Once fuel prices spiked over $4 a gallon last year, people opened their eyes and started looking at alternatives to the traditional paradigm of ‘If I want power, I have to go for a V-8,’” Crowley says.

But Mustang buyers are looking for a V-8, he concedes.  “That’s a traditional powertrain for them.  I don’t think that group is ready today for an EcoBoost powertrain.  They may in the future, but today I think it is all about V-8 horsepower.”

Ford’s EcoBoost technology employs direct injection, dual turbo-chargers and a smaller engine to achieve high output with conservative fuel economy.  Ford says its EcoBoost V-6s will achieve the same power as a 4.6-liter V-8, while retaining the fuel economy of a V-6.

In the 2010 Lincoln MKS, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost-equipped V-6 achieves 355 horsepower, compared with 273 horsepower made by the standard 3.7-liter V-6 available for the flagship sedan.  The EcoBoost V-6 will also show up as an option for the Ford Flex and Ford Taurus SHO.  So far, Ford hasn’t announced the price of the option for any of those vehicles.

Ford has said that 90 percent of its vehicles will have an EcoBoost option by 2014, and expects to sell 750,000 EcoBoost-equipped vehicles by that time.  Four-cylinder engines will get the EcoBoost technology soon, and although Ford hasn’t announced which vehicles will see that application first, there is some speculation that the Ford Focus or Ford Fiesta is slated to receive the engine.

Crowley says he will focus on the technology’s advanced features in marketing.  “It will be a challenge,” he says.

“Although the technology has been around for a while, we are really introducing a new brand into the marketplace with EcoBoost.  Our message to the marketplace will be that EcoBoost is a smart solution to deliver the fuel economy that you demand and the performance that you need.”

EcoBoost will be available in the 2010 Lincoln MKS, 2010 Ford Flex and 2010 Ford Taurus SHO by the end of the year.

First Expeditions, Lincolns roll at retooled truck plant

By Alex Davis

The first Lincoln Navigators and Ford Expeditions made in Louisville are rolling off the assembly lines after a $200 million conversion project at Ford Motor Co.’s Kentucky Truck Plant.

Gov. Steve Beshear, Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson and other local officials took turns yesterday admiring a shiny blue Navigator with an asking price of $60,585, and an Expedition with chrome wheels that costs $54,710.

Sales of both upscale vehicles plunged 72 percent and 70 percent, respectively, in the first quarter of 2009 from a year earlier, and Ford executives said future sales trends will be determined partly by fuel costs and how soon the nation’s economy pulls out of a deep recession.

But during a tour of the retooled truck plant on Chamberlain Lane in eastern Jefferson County, they emphasized how the facility’s new flexible features allow multiple models to be produced using the same equipment, without a slowdown in volume.

In past years, it took six months or longer to make changes for new models.

We are moving very quickly to transform our manufacturing operations to allow us to respond to consumer demand,” said Jim Tetreault, Ford’s vice president of North American manufacturing.

2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor

This truck is going to be awesome…

Some specs regarding the trucks off road prowess.Via edmunds.com:

In order to take full advantage of the Raptor’s hardware, SVT’s engineers also made some changes to the Raptor’s software. Engaging the “off-road mode” not only switches off the truck’s electronic stability control system, but also changes the programming for the antilock brake system to allow more wheel lockup while reducing pedal flutter. The brake bias also changes, with more braking power directed to the rear wheels. “This lessens the truck’s inherent understeer, so it turns in quicker when you’re running in the dirt,” Hameedi tells us.

Off-road mode also reprograms the transmission, so it holds gear ratios into the upper reaches of the rpm range while the throttle mapping changes to offer better control. Even more important, off-road mode commands the standard electronic locking differential in back to remain fully locked at any speed.

Last but not least, the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is the first Ford truck to offer electronic hill descent control. It’s not really a useful feature for fast desert running, but it broadens the truck’s appeal even further by allowing some measure of capability when it comes to low-speed rock-crawling.

Ford Finishes Retooling Kentucky Truck Plant

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Ford Motor Company has completed a $200 million investment in the retooling of its Kentucky Truck Plant for production of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator.

The retooling includes the installation of a flexible body shop that will allow the plant to produce more fuel-efficient 2009 model Expedition and Navigator SUVs alongside popular Ford F-Series Super Duty pickups.

After what’s described as the fastest retooling of a plant in Ford’s history, the Kentucky Truck Plant is back up and running after less than four months. The makeover is part of a move by Ford toward leaner and more flexible manufacturing across its North American plant lineup.
