Ford details progress on blueprint for sustainability

Car giant Ford’s annual sustainability report shows that the company is on track to reach its product carbon dioxide goal, which calls for a 30 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020, the company said.

The report details Ford’s electric vehicle strategy and introduction of new models that achieve best-in-class fuel economy. The company also cut its global water use by 24 per cent and improves its energy efficiency in North America by 4.5 per cent.

‘Our economic and environmental goals are aligned. In fact, we believe that the best way for us to be more profitable is to make our business and products more sustainable,’ said Bill Ford, executive chairman, Ford Motor Company.

Included in the report are sections dealing with climate change that summarise the company’s progress toward its CO2 reduction goal, its approach to climate change policy, vehicle and fuel and technologies to achieve improved fuel economy for Ford products, the company’s accelerated electrification strategy, human rights initiatives and how the One Ford plan is addressing the economic challenges facing the industry today.

2010 Ford Taurus SHO named Esquire Car of the Year

The Ford Taurus hasn’t even hit the market yet, but it’s already beginning to win props from the press. Esquire has entered the award fray by picking the new Taurus SHO as its inaugural 2010 Car of the Year. The long-running men’s magazine has three criteria for its award: terrific ride and handling with plenty of speed; attractive sheetmetal that elicits stares; and an attainable price point. Editor-in-chief David Granger says that the SHO hits all the marks, as the twin-turbocharged Ford was the unanimous winner amongst Esquire editors.

Esquire correspondent (and Automobile Magazine columnist) Ezra Dyer added that the SHO was a good every day driver that “happens to have a secret under the hood.” We’re pretty sure 365 horsepower is enough juice to fall in the ‘sleeper’ category. Ford is, for obvious reasons, pleased with its latest piece of hardware, adding that “we trust that customers will be equally impressed.”

Oh, and before you ask (’cause we did) – although the Taurus SHO hasn’t hit the market and the official media drive hasn’t happened yet, Esquire did manage to secure a drive of the car before they handed out the award, although it isn’t immediately clear what other cars were considered for the award. Interestingly, the magazine’s article apparently doesn’t actually delve into the area of driving impressions, so Ford says it was copacetic with the pre-embargo coverage. Us? We’ll finally get our chance to flog the SHO very soon, but we’ve promised the Blue Oval not to tell you about it until late July, so you’ll have to wait. Hit the jump to read Ford’s press release.

Ford Fusion Hybrid the most patented car in history?

More technology than ever before is being added to modern automobiles, and much of this whiz-bang tech has been created to cut down on fuel consumption and reduce emissions. This being the case, it’s not particularly surprising to hear that the new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid holds the title of The Most Patented Car in History. So says Christine Wren, director of business development for The Patent Board, a firm that tracks and analyzes patents across 17 industries globally:
Ford’s patented technologies are closer to the cutting edge than its competitors. Ford’s overall patent portfolio plays a significant role in serving as a foundation for other technology innovation as shown by receiving 20 percent more citations than the average portfolio in this industry.

Just how many patents are we talking about? According to the Blue Oval, there are 119 total patents and patent applications for the 2010 Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid alone, including patents related to Ford’s proprietary hybrid technology, SmartGuage with EcoGuide, Blind Spot Information System and EasyFuel Capless Fuel-Filler System. Want to know more? Make the jump for the official press release.

Ford Uses Movie To Promote Raptor Truck

Ford is promoting a modified version of its F-150 pickup truck, the 2010 F-150 SVT Raptor, in a full-length film that debuts on June 23. The automaker will show the film, “Raptor – Born in Baja” — produced for Ford by Brentwood Communications — at an event at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, Calif., for automotive and off-road motorsports executives, entertainment industry players, celebs and media. The documentary follows Ford designers, engineers and race program directors, aftermarket teams, and Baja race team Foutz Motorsports as they construct, test and race the F-150 SVT Raptor in the 631-mile Baja 1000 race.

Following the June 23 premiere of the film, a one-hour television version will air on Speed Channel on July 12, with several additional airings.

Doug Scott, Ford Truck marketing manager, says: “with the F-150 SVT Raptor, we are delivering a true off-road performance truck with the proven ‘Built Ford Tough’ capability and durability that is at the core of every F-150.”

The truck will be available in showrooms in July with a MSRP of $38,995.

Test Drive: 2010 Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost V6

The 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine is the first to provide the luxurious power and easy maintenance of a V8 with the fuel economy of a V6
By Mike Spinelli Posted 06.01.2009 at 6:04 pm

Test Drive: 2010 Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost V6: Lincoln’s new MKT offers a combination of utility and performance in a luxurious package. Decide for yourself about that grille.

Imagine the laughter, back in 1965, if Ford had crossed the kid-friendly Country Squire station wagon with the stately Lincoln Continental. A car shopper would have spit-launched his Lucky Strike right into the salesman’s shirt pocket. These days, luxurious motoring and conveying a large brood to Chuck E. Cheese or the World’s Largest Ball of Twine aren’t as mutually exclusive as they once were. Take as exhibit, well probably O at this point, the Lincoln MKT.

The MKT is a premium, seven-seat crossover sharing a chassis with the roomy, right-angled Ford Flex. It’s obvious Ford is in the process of redefining what the Lincoln brand means, visually; the house Henry M. Leland built has endowed the MKT with a largely tasteful mix of tapering and curvature. A sloping, nautical rear section recalling the mid-1990s Lincoln Mark VIII, for good or ill, makes for convenient cargo access by way of a weight-saving magnesium lift gate. As for that grille? I’m not getting involved; it’s your call.

Where the ’65 Continental’s giant-displacement V8 slugged leaded premium like Henry VII dispatched wives and turkey drumsticks, the MKT moves with far greater economy. The MKT gets power from Ford’s new EcoBoost V6, a 3.5-liter fitted with two Honeywell GT15 water-cooled turbochargers. That setup, available on the higher-spec MKT model, produces 355 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded. It’s an smoothly accelerating and efficient powerplant that bests the fuel economy of many V8-powered competitors with similar horsepower, turning in a city/highway rating of 16/22 mpg. More important for luxury-car buyers, the EcoBoost gives the MKT the lush and quiet takeoff of a premium luxury car, something Lincoln’s badly needed to reconcile in the post-V8 age. For luxury-car buyers, acceleration feel is an important consideration — the equivalent to shelling out for the whir of a Rolex Oyster over the ticking of a Timex.
