2011 Ford Mustang Gets New V-6: 305 HP, 30 MPG Highway

2011 Ford Mustang V-6  An all-new engine promises to make the base V-6  Mustang a lot more exciting for 2011.

Today (and in advance of the  pressers), officially announced that a new all-aluminum 3.7-liter DOHC V-6 will power the  Mustang, producing an impressive 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet. Two new six-speed transmissions (versus five-speeds for 2010) will pair with the engine, and a limited-slip differential and new suspension settings will help take advantage of the boost in power.

2011 Ford Mustang V-6 - new Duratec 3.7-liter The new 3.7-liter engine in the 2011 Mustang, part of  Duratec family, uses Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) and a Direct Acting Mechanical Bucket (DAMB) valvetrain to vary valve control through the rev range (up to 7,000 rpm) and achieve a three percent improvement in fuel efficiency and ten percent more power versus the same engine without this technology. Highway ratings with the new engine will be as high as 30 mpg, and it uses regular, not premium, gasoline. The engine also gets a number of other measures to improve efficiency, power, and durability, including tuned composite intake manifolds, coil-on-plug ignition, and piston-cooling jets, plus a cold-air induction system and a deep-sump oil pan. 2011 Ford Mustang V-6 - new Duratec 3.7-liter

In a press release accompanying the announcement, made special note of the engine sound, saying that engineers have worked to on the engine’s breathing with satisfying performance sounds in mind.

Both of the new six-speed transmissions get improvements in addition to their extra ratios. The manual gearbox has a short-throw linkage, while the automatic comes with a “hill mode” that helps to provide more engine braking on steep grades. A lower 3.31 rear axle ratio will be offered for improved performance, especially from a standing start.

With the new six-speed automatic, the 2011 Mustang carries anticipated EPA fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg city, 30 highway with the automatic (up 25 percent versus 2010) and 18/29 with the manual transmission. Also contributing to these improvements are a new electric power-steering system and a host of small aerodynamic enhancements.

To help handle the added power, the 2011 Mustang V-6 gets revised damper tuning and spring rates, plus a new rear lower control arm and stiffened stabilizer-bar bushings;  also adjusted the car’s front/rear aerodynamic balance to help the Mustang feel more “planted.” It also gets larger brake rotors—11.5 inches in front and 11.8 in back.

2011 Ford Mustang V-6  Inside, the changes include some additional soundproofing and new door seals, plus an upgraded instrument cluster, including a 160-mph speedometer and 8,000-rpm tach.  MyKey system will be offered on the Mustang for the first time for 2011, along with a garage-door opener, message center, and new blind-spot aids for the mirrors.

Beginning in August, a Performance Package will be offered on the V-6, bringing the lower axle ratio plus 19-inch wheels, a strut tower brace, summer performance tires, a sport mode for the stability control, and the firmer suspension from the Mustang GT.

Up through 2010, the Mustang continues with an updated SOHC version of the Cologne V-6, which dates back decades and is otherwise used in the Ranger and Explorer. We drove a Mustang Coupe with that engine just this past summer and found the torquey but uncivilized engine satisfying with the legendary pony car but not very pulse-quickening.

With the 3.6-liter V-6 engine in the  producing 305 horsepower and getting EPA ratings of up to 18 mpg city, 29 highway, the lighter Mustang should be considerably quicker than the base  while also more fuel-efficient. That’s our kind of muscle car.

A hat tip to our fellow High Gear Media site MustangBlog.com for first reporting on this new engine many months ago.

is heavily rumored to have other powertrain surprises in the works for the  Mustang GT, which might take the form of an EcoBoost V-6 version or one with the upcoming 5.0-liter ‘Coyote’ V-8. We’ll bring you more details on that, as well as on pricing and on-sale dates for the  Mustang V-6, as soon as we have them.

Ford Fusion has record year

BRYCE G. HOFFMAN
The Detroit News

Sales of the Ford Fusion have topped 151,000 units this year, making it the best-selling car from a domestic manufacturer.

Ford Motor Co. today said its popular midsized sedan already has set a new annual sales record — passing its previous high of 149,552 units set in 2007.

“It’s extraordinary that a car could set a sales record in an environment where overall industry sales are down 26 percent from a year ago,” said Ford sales analyst George Pipas.

In the first 10 months of this year, Fusion sales were 15 percent higher than they were during the same period in 2008, making it one of the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the country.

Fusion sales received a big boost from the new Fusion Hybrid, which now accounts for nearly 20 percent of all Fusion retail sales. And Ford said more than 60 percent of those buying the hybrid model are converts from other brands — primarily Toyota and Honda.

It also has been helped by stellar ratings from influential publications like Consumer Reports, which says its quality is now superior to competing models from Japan’s leading carmakers.

The Fusion was introduced in 2005 as a 2006 model. It is produced in Hermosillo, Mexico.

Ford’s EcoBoost engines are selling faster than the automaker expected

By Robert Schoenberger, The Plain Dealer
November 13, 2009, 5:16PM

Sales of Ford Motor Co. vehicles equipped with Brook Park-built EcoBoost engines are running about 65 percent better than the company’s projections, Ford said Friday.

Moreover, the vehicles on which the engine is available are attracting younger buyers from the automaker’s competitors.

“EcoBoost technology is helping bring in a new customer to Ford dealer showrooms,” said Ford marketing manager Amy Marentic.

Launched in July in Ford’s Lincoln MKS Luxury car, the turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 packs the horsepower of a V-8 but the fuel economy of a V-6. Ford had expected 25 percent of MKS buyers to opt for the higher-tech engine. Instead, about 30 percent of buyers are choosing it.

Ford offers the engine on the MKS, the Lincoln MKT crossover, the Ford Flex crossover and the Taurus SHO, a hotrod version of the Taurus sedan. The SHO has provided the most impressive sales numbers.

At the vehicle’s launch, Ford marketers said they expected the $40,000 SHO to make up 10 percent of Taurus sales. In the three months that it’s been available, though, the SHO has made up closer to 20 percent of Taurus sales.

Of the four vehicles with the engine, the Taurus is the best-selling by a wide margin.

Eric Walker, general manager of Marshall Ford Lincoln Superstore in Mayfield Heights, said the $10,000 price difference between the SHO and the mainstream Taurus limits its appeal.

“I’m selling the regular models a lot quicker than I am the SHO,” Walker said. Lower-priced Taurus models sell within a week, he said, but it can take twice that to sell a SHO. Even at that rate, the SHO is doing better than expected.

Ford Seat Belt: Inflatable Belts Bring Air Bags To Back Seat

DETROIT — Air bags have long been mounted in the steering wheel, dashboard and sides of vehicles. Now, they’re in the seat belts.

Ford Motor Co. plans to introduce seat belt-mounted air bags in the back seat of the 2011 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, which will hit the market next fall. Ford says it’s the first automaker to mass produce the technology.

The belts have a cylindrical air bag that stretches from the buckle to the shoulder and fits inside a pocket sewn into the belt. The car sends a signal that releases the bag, which inflates more gently than a front air bag, so it’s safer for children.

Srini Sundararajan, the Ford engineer who was chiefly responsible for developing the device, says the wider belts and bags help distribute crash forces across the occupant’s chest, so there’s less chance of serious injury. It also supports the head and neck.

“The top two lifesaving devices today are the seat belt and the air bag. This combines them into one great feature,” Sundararajan said.

Clarence Ditlow, head of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, says the belts are particularly effective at protecting the elderly, who are more frail.

“You often end up with broken ribs” during a crash with a conventional seat belt, Ditlow said.

Ford has been working on the technology for a decade and had to overcome numerous challenges bringing it to market.

Front air bags are powered by a device that generates hot gas. They deploy very quickly because they need to cover a greater distance before they reach the driver or passenger. Seat belt air bags don’t have that distance to cover, so they can deploy more gently, using cold gas technology, although Srini said they’re still fully deployed in a tenth of a second.

Ford also did a significant amount of testing to make sure the bags would protect children, even if they’re sleeping and their heads are drooping. The belt also works with booster seats.

Sue Cischke, Ford’s group vice president for sustainability, environmental and safety engineering, wouldn’t say how much the belts with air bags will cost, but she did say the technology is expensive. They will be available as an option at first, since some drivers – particularly those without children – may not feel they need them.

“With any new safety technology, you have to do a lot to educate the consumer,” she said. “We’re not sure what people will value with this.”

Cischke said the Explorer was chosen for the new seat belts because it’s popular with families and has also been a platform for other safety introductions, such as side-curtain air bags and stability control. Cischke said the price could come down substantially if Ford decides to put the seat belts on other vehicles.

Edward DeSmet, a technical seat belt specialist at Ford, said test subjects found the padded belts even more comfortable than regular ones. He hopes that leads more people to use them. U.S. seat belt usage in back seats is still at a dismal 60 percent, compared with 83 percent in the vehicle as a whole, DeSmet said.
