* The all-new 2010 Lincoln MKT three-row luxury crossover received five-star ratings for both frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

* MKT offers a high level of crash protection as well as cutting-edge crash-avoidance and driver-awareness technology such as Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support, and a Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert system

DEARBORN, Mich. – Ford Motor Company added to its leading number of five-star crash test-rated vehicles as the 2010 Lincoln MKT earned top ratings for frontal and side-impact crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Lincoln’s three-row luxury crossover previously earned a 2009 Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Ford Motor Company has more Top Safety Pick ratings and more U.S. government five-star ratings than any other automaker.

Leading the industry in both five-star crash test ratings and Top Safety Pick awards is very significant because customers increasingly rely on NHTSA and IIHS ratings when choosing a new vehicle said Susan Cischke, Ford’s group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering.

A winning combination

The all-new MKT is attracting a balanced mix of Lincoln loyalists and new customers with its array of standard and optional crash-protection, crash-avoidance and driver-awareness features in addition to distinctive design, interior spaciousness, craftsmanship and fuel economy.

Since the MKT went on sale last fall, approximately 45 percent of MKT purchasers have traded in competitive models, most commonly the Acura MDX and Cadillac SRX. More than half of those buyers opted for the 3.5-liter EcoBoost™ engine.

Customer interest in MKT’s driver-awareness features has been strong as well. Nearly one in three purchasers of the MKT opts for Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support and three of four opt for a package that includes Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with Cross Traffic Alert.

Our research shows that MKT customers are tech-savvy, and luxury vehicle buyers tend to be early adopters of new safety, audio, infotainment and powertrain features said Kate Pearce, Lincoln MKT marketing manager. Not only is the MKT packed with standard luxury features and state-of-the-art technologies, it is unsurpassed in its segment for highway fuel economy

Technology under the skin

The Lincoln MKT features Ford’s Trinity Front Crash Body Architecture. The energy-absorbing body structure is optimized for strength and stiffness and features octagonal front frame rails, engine cradle/front subframe and shotgun front structural members designed to absorb and redirect crash forces away from the passenger compartment.

Lincoln MKT also includes Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement Architecture (SPACE®) to optimize side-impact occupant protection. The SPACE system integrates a hydroformed high-strength steel tube in the floor that runs the width of the vehicle from B-pillar to B-pillar and reinforcements along the rocker panels to help protect passengers in side-impact incidents.

Lincoln MKT also features Ford’s Personal Safety System™, combining multiple technologies to tailor the air bag package and safety belt functions to the individual passenger and the accident circumstances. The system can identify variables, such as severity of the crash, weight of the individual passenger and safety belt usage, to adjust air bag deployment force.

The MKT’s array of advanced safety technologies raises the bar for luxury vehicles and pushes the new frontier of ’active’ crash-avoidance features that help drivers avoid or reduce the severity of accidents said Steve Kozak, chief engineer, Ford Safety Systems.

Test Drive: 2010 Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost V6

The 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine is the first to provide the luxurious power and easy maintenance of a V8 with the fuel economy of a V6
By Mike Spinelli Posted 06.01.2009 at 6:04 pm

Test Drive: 2010 Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost V6: Lincoln’s new MKT offers a combination of utility and performance in a luxurious package. Decide for yourself about that grille.

Imagine the laughter, back in 1965, if Ford had crossed the kid-friendly Country Squire station wagon with the stately Lincoln Continental. A car shopper would have spit-launched his Lucky Strike right into the salesman’s shirt pocket. These days, luxurious motoring and conveying a large brood to Chuck E. Cheese or the World’s Largest Ball of Twine aren’t as mutually exclusive as they once were. Take as exhibit, well probably O at this point, the Lincoln MKT.

The MKT is a premium, seven-seat crossover sharing a chassis with the roomy, right-angled Ford Flex. It’s obvious Ford is in the process of redefining what the Lincoln brand means, visually; the house Henry M. Leland built has endowed the MKT with a largely tasteful mix of tapering and curvature. A sloping, nautical rear section recalling the mid-1990s Lincoln Mark VIII, for good or ill, makes for convenient cargo access by way of a weight-saving magnesium lift gate. As for that grille? I’m not getting involved; it’s your call.

Where the ‘65 Continental’s giant-displacement V8 slugged leaded premium like Henry VII dispatched wives and turkey drumsticks, the MKT moves with far greater economy. The MKT gets power from Ford’s new EcoBoost V6, a 3.5-liter fitted with two Honeywell GT15 water-cooled turbochargers. That setup, available on the higher-spec MKT model, produces 355 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque on regular unleaded. It’s an smoothly accelerating and efficient powerplant that bests the fuel economy of many V8-powered competitors with similar horsepower, turning in a city/highway rating of 16/22 mpg. More important for luxury-car buyers, the EcoBoost gives the MKT the lush and quiet takeoff of a premium luxury car, something Lincoln’s badly needed to reconcile in the post-V8 age. For luxury-car buyers, acceleration feel is an important consideration — the equivalent to shelling out for the whir of a Rolex Oyster over the ticking of a Timex.

Ford starts EcoBoost production in Cleveland

On the same day that President Obama announced tough new CAFE standards for new cars in the coming half-decade, Ford began production of its new, more efficient EcoBoost engine in Ohio. As Green Car Advisor says, Ford couldn’t have picked a better day. The new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine will first make its way into the Ford Flex, Ford Taurus SHO, Lincoln MKS sedan and Lincoln MKT crossover vehicles. The turbocharged engines deliver a fuel economy boost of around 20 percent without an expensive hybrid powertrain. Ford says that 90 percent of its models will be available with EcoBoost engines by 2013.

Production started yesterday at the Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1, located in Brook Park, Ohio. This plant first opened in 1951 and currently employs 250 people. Ford announced that the plant, which had been closed since 2007, would be reopened to build the EcoBoost engines back in February. Read more about the EcoBoost technology here and here and after the jump.

EcoBoost’s best friend: Ford unveils new 6F-55 six-speed automatic

When Ford debuted its 6F transmission back in late 2005, we were told it could handle up to 300 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. That transmission debuted with the automaker’s 3.5L V6 and both are now widely used together in a number of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products. Times have changed, however, and Ford has introduced a new version of its 3.5L V6 with twin turbochargers and direct injection. Called the 3.5L EcoBoost, this engine makes more power than the original 6F transmission, now called the 6F-50, can handle. Enter the 6F-55, a new version of the 6F-50 with beefed up internals to handle the 3.5L EcoBoost’s 355-365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. One example is the new ring gear on the 6F-55 (shown at right), which is 41.5mm thick compared to 31.5 mm on the 6F-50.

The 6F-55 will be used initially in versions of the Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS and MKT that feature the 3.5L EcoBoost V6. It will also be the only transmission available for the new 2010 Ford Taurus SHO that features the most powerful version of Ford’s EcoBoost V6 (sorry SHO fans, no standard transmission will be offered). Each application will also feature SelectShift for manual operating the tranny with either the console-mounted shifter or paddle shifters on the steering wheel. We’ll have to wait for our first turn behind the wheel of an EcoBoost-equipped Ford product to judge just how well the new 6F-55 handles all that extra power, but based on the rather significant list of internal changes detailed in the press release after the jump, the new tranny appears more than capable of handling our heavy left foot.
