Miller built his own race track two years ago. Now he has a new nationwide professional road racing series to go with it.
Miller Motorsports Park launched the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup program on Saturday at the track in Tooele. Friday night, Miller hosted a reception at Little America hotel in Salt Lake City that was attended by representatives from Ford Racing and presenting sponsor BF Goodrich Tires.
Saturday, approximately 25 examples of the new Ford Mustang FR500S – the only production-line-built racing car in the history of Ford Motor Co. and an evolution of the Mustang Challenge car developed by MMP – were delivered to their new owners.
Seminars were held to teach the new owners about the cars, the AIM data-acquisition system and series rules and regulations.
Owners were able to get acclimated to their cars with track time in the afternoon.
Miller Motorsports Park and Ford Racing announced the opening series last fall at the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) convention in Las Vegas.
Priced at $75,000 race-ready, the 325-hp Mustang FR500S is built on a special assembly line without the seats, carpet, noise insulation and other interior features that are normally included in a street car.
The Grand American Road Racing Association, based in Daytona Beach, Fla., will sanction the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup. It will serve as a support race to many of the top pro road racing series in North America.
The inaugural season will consist of eight races at venues throughout the U.S. and Canada. It will stop at MMP on Sept. 21.
